🚨Update🚨 Lonnie G. Bunch III announced that he is stepping down as secretary of the Smithsonian on Tuesday. Bunch served as secretary for 7 years and oversaw the creation of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. In an interview with @nytimes Bunch said it wasn’t pressure from the Trump administration that led to his resignation, but he did acknowledge how stressful the role has become in Trump’s second term. Trump wants to put a warning label on American history. Seriously. The White House is accusing the Smithsonian of being “anti-American” because apparently telling the full story of America, including the ugly parts, is now considered unpatriotic. And now Trump allies are trying to reshape the Smithsonian from the inside. There’s a bigger question underneath it all: Who gets to decide what version of American history we tell?
