#TakePart in today’s
#PlanYourPark meeting for Ossian Sweet!
“For decades, Detroit was a battleground for fair housing. In 1925, after a number of violent clashes over African Americans moving into all-white neighborhoods, Dr. Ossian and Gladys Sweet moved into a home at the corner of Garland and Charlevoix on Detroit’s Eastside. A racist mob would form and in defense of their home, two whites would be shot, and the Sweets and their houseguests would be charged with murder. Represented by a defense team, led by Clarence Darrow, the Sweet Trials of 1925, would result in an acquittal with the court, recognizing their right to defend their home and themselves. The Sweet Home is now a civil rights site on the National Register of Historic Places. For years, advocates have been trying to do more to commemorate this piece of our history. Almost 100 years later, the time has finally come.” Jamon Jordan Official Historian, City of Detroit 👊🏽
