#Repost Friends of Rouge Park Rouge Park has a rare and special type of habitat that was once common in Michigan - tallgrass prairie. Native Americans maintained this habitat and kept it from transitioning to forest by periodically burning. Friends of Rouge Park, with partnership from the City of Detroit General Services Department and Huron-Clinton Metroparks, is working to restore the prairie with a prescribed burn, that took place yesterday afternoon, and will be followed by periodic burns in different sections of the 40 acres. These burns are being led by David Borneman who specializes in ecological restoration using controlled burns. The fire will set back invasive woody species and European grasses and stimulate the native seed bank. #friendsofrougepark #rougeparkdetroit #detroitparks #tallgrassprairie
