In 1991, Italian immunologist Fernando Aiuti kissed Rosaria Iardino, a 25 year old woman living with HIV, in front of journalists at an AIDS conference in Cagliari, Italy. The dramatic gesture challenged widespread fears that HIV could spread through kissing and became a powerful symbol against discrimination. HIV is not transmitted through saliva, and kissing carries no risk of transmission. At the time, the photograph helped counter misinformation and the stigma surrounding people living with HIV.
