Dmitri Mendeleev, creator of the periodic table, was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry nine times between 1905 and 1907. In 1906, the Nobel Committee actually voted to recommend him, but the Swedish Academy rejected the recommendation and the prize went to Henri Moissan. Historians have pointed to Svante Arrhenius, who strongly opposed Mendeleev after Mendeleev had criticized his theory of electrolytic dissociation. Mendeleev died in 1907 without ever receiving the Nobel Prize.
