Wildfires in Sumatra and Kalimantan, Indonesia, have burned more than 100,000 acres of land. Just days ahead of #CleanAirDay, observations show that smoke from the fires has traveled much further, crossing borders to neighbouring countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. Wildfire smoke contains particulate matter and harmful gases that can seriously affect our health. As smoke spreads, air quality can quickly reach hazardous levels, increasing the risk of respiratory problems. Monitoring fires, forecasting whe re smoke will travel, and issuing timely warnings can help authorities take appropriate measures to protect public health and enable people to reduce their exposure to polluted air.
