“A painting is not a picture of an experience, but is the experience.” - Mark Rothko I discovered my new favorite Rothko at the fondationlv exposition today. Literally stood in front of this for nearly 30 minutes and I can’t explain why, but it moved me to tears. One of the reasons I have come to love Rothko so much is that his paintings are as much - if not more - about the observer than they are about him. He rarely if ever explained any of his paintings because he wanted the viewer to have their own unique experience and interpretation and be moved by them in their own way. Whether it is the relationship with light or shapes or colors, this work in particular (entitled No. 11/No. 20, from 1949) spoke to me in a way that stood out.
