I share the story of Pierre Damas Bel, a 20-year-old Haitian young man who came to America with plans for his education and his future, but found himself wearing a GPS ankle monitor after losing Temporary Protected Status. This one hits close to home because my children and grandchildren have Haitian blood, so when Haitian people are treated like they don’t belong, I think about how those words and actions land on families like mine. We need immigration laws, but more than anything we REALLY need humanity. Those two things should never cancel each other out. Rest easy, young man.
