One of the hardest things about suicidal crisis is that people do not always know how to ask for
help in a clear or direct way.
As an A&E doctor, I have met patients carrying enormous amounts of pain, trauma, shame and
guilt. Some already believe they are a burden to the people around them. Others have been struggling for so long that finding the right words can feel impossible.
That is why I think we have to listen beyond how perfectly someone explains what they are feeling.
Take the pain seriously. Stay present. Ask questions with compassion. Help them reach
support.
You do not need to have all the answers to make somebody feel heard.
Sometimes hope can begin with one person choosing to listen.
If you are struggling or worried about someone else, please reach out for support. In the UK,
Samaritans are available 24/7 on 116 123. If someone is in immediate danger, call 999.
