Happy birthday to Don Muraco, who turns 77 today.
Muraco was “The Rock” in the WWF a decade before Dwayne Johnson. He took the nickname as a babyface in late 1987 after splitting from Bob Orton and carried it through the 1988 Royal Rumble, WrestleMania IV and the first SummerSlam.
Before that he was The Magnificent Muraco, a two-time Intercontinental Champion whose second reign lasted 385 days, the winner of the first King of the Ring tournament in 1985, and half of the October 17, 1983 steel cage match with Jimmy Snuka at Madison Square Garden that Mick Foley has credited as the reason he got into wrestling. He also spent 1985 in Fuji Vice and Fuji General with Mr. Fuji on Tuesday Night Titans. Foley inducted him into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004.
