On Sept. 1, UC Berkeley student Manny Morando Neri walked into the Chicanx Latinx Student Development office looking to speak with Lupe Gallegos-Diaz about his research project that she had been overseeing. Morando Neri was informed that Gallegos-Diaz would not be returning to the office and that she was placed on administrative leave. “I asked them what was going to happen with my (research) projects, and they didn’t know,” he said. Gallegos-Diaz is the director of the Chicanx Latinx Student Development Office and Latinx Student Resource Center. She is also an ethnic studies lecturer.
