Whether or not we like it, much of the writing that we consume has been written by artificial intelligence. News reporting by The Daily Californian has revealed that AI use is prevalent across communications by the city of Berkeley and UC Berkeley. Using Pangram, an AI detection software that claims a 0.01% false positive rate, the Daily Cal flagged AI use in Berkeley Mayor Adena Ishii’s script for a video message about the Eighth and Harrison encampment, as well as in an obituary published by a campus department, among other communications. The rampant use of AI for text generation is changing the way that we engage with texts. When we read, we trust that the author of a text has tried their best to communicate a set of thoughts. If we are keen readers, we will make note of word choice and flow; we will catalogue quirks and idiosyncrasies.
