“A growing population paired with golf’s booming appeal called for an upgrade of GE’s golf course. The original layout, described by Roger O’Gara in The Berkshire Eagle, “wasn’t much more than a pitch and putt affair, with the putting surfaces none too smooth.” By 1956, golf was now considered a major American sport, and so the GEAA called upon Middleton and Colonel Rowland Armacost, former golf professional at Wahconah Country Club, to design a more formal nine-hole, 3,000-yard layout. Armacost, formally recognized as the course architect, designed and expanded several other area courses, including Waubeeka Golf Links, just up Route 7, a decade later. The course opened for play in 1957 and adopted a membership model similar to that of many British golf clubs. Only members of the GEAA were able to enroll as members of the golf course, but higher-priced, daily green fees were accepted to help support course operations.
