Hundreds of Oregonians from across the political spectrum gathered outside the Oregon State Capitol in Salem on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, to demand a three-year statewide moratorium on new data centers. Demonstrators objected to the enormous amounts of water and electricity data centers consume, particularly while their operators receive substantial tax breaks. They also argued that local communities should have more control over where the facilities are built. Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek spoke at the rally and endorsed a statewide moratorium, while her Republican challenger, Sen. Christine Drazan, called for one later that day.
