Ryan Marks recorded this black bear climbing a wooden fence, walking its narrow top like a tightrope, then slowly sinking out of sight like a kid sliding under the dinner table after someone asks who ate the dessert. Marks said the bear had just killed one of his chickens in his south Ashland backyard on Sept. 3. About a week earlier, a bear killed his dad’s chicken in the same area. ODFW says a shortage of mountain berries is sending hungry bears deeper into Ashland neighborhoods, where garbage and chicken coops offer easy meals.
