Twenty-seven Republican-controlled states have imposed measures to restrict trans athletes from playing in girls’ and women’s sports since 2020, but this November will be the first time voters have a chance to weigh in on the question directly. Ballot measures are appearing this year in Washington, Arizona, Colorado and Nebraska. But Washington’s goes further than any other state in one key way: it would apply to all students seeking to play girls’ sports, not just athletes whose eligibility has been challenged.
