As parents, I think we sometimes get this backwards.
We work so hard to give our children a better life.
Better schools.
Better opportunities.
More experiences.
More of the things we didn’t have.
But eventually, we won’t be there to make the decisions for them.
And that’s when what we gave them matters less than who we helped them become.
Can they handle failure?
Can they believe in themselves when nobody else does?
Can they think for themselves?
Can they communicate?
Can they adapt when life doesn’t go to plan?
Can they get knocked down and find the strength to get back up?
I’ve spent decades learning lessons about confidence, self-belief, discipline, resilience, success and fulfilment.
Some of them I wish I’d understood when I was 9.
And now, as a dad, one belief keeps getting stronger:
If we know better, we have a responsibility to teach better.
Our greatest legacy won’t be what we leave to our children.
It will be what we leave within them.
