Massachusetts is the latest state to tighten data center regulations. Gov. Maura Healey has signed an executive order requiring new data centers to bring their own energy supply or pay into a fund that returns money to ratepayers. Developers will also have to reach agreements with the cities and towns where they plan to build. Those communities will be able to negotiate terms that could include infrastructure investments and pollution limits. The goal, Healey stated, is to make sure the enormous energy demands of new data centers don’t come at the expense of Massachusetts residents and businesses.
