For more than 130 years, people have gone into the Superstition Mountains looking for the same lost gold mine. Nobody has ever proven they found it. Jacob Waltz was real. He was a German prospector who lived in Phoenix and passed away in 1891. After his death, roughly 50 pounds of high-grade gold ore was reportedly found beneath his bed. Where that gold came from is still unknown. The stories came later. A hidden Peralta mine. A massacre. Secret maps. Gold buried near Weaver’s Needle. Waltz supposedly revealing the location on his deathbed. None of it has ever been proven. And despite the name, Waltz was not Dutch. “Dutchman” likely came from a misunderstanding of “Deutsch,” meaning German. The geology makes the legend even stranger.
