On September 7, 1850, Margaret Ann Frink and her husband, Ledyard Frink, arrived in Sacramento City after traveling for 5 months and 7 days that covered 2,418 miles from their home in Martinsville, Indiana to Sacramento, California. They left their home on March 30, 1850 and traveled overland by wagon upon hearing news of gold in California. During their journey, Margaret kept a daily journal. Shortly after arriving in Sacramento, the Frinks opened a hotel on K Street between 6th and 7th Streets opposite from the Golden Eagle Hotel. Their small hotel was up and running, unfortunately, just in time for the cholera epidemic to break out in Sacramento in late October 1850. After the month-long cholera epidemic, the Frinks relocated their hotel one block north to J Street. Mr. Frink bought three dairy cows for $275, and the Frink Hotel began to offer something that no other hotel offered in Sacramento, free milk for their guests.
