we started recording what would become our fourth album “welcome to the monkey house” twenty-five years ago tomorrow, september 11, 2001.
the album was recorded in a narrow abandoned office building in the central east side of portland. there we were, all of us packed in there 10 hours a day every day, making music, making dumb web videos (watercooler, anyone?) years before youtube or tiktok.
and we had a half dozen vhs tapes we’d watch over and over: john waters’ “polyester,” “the swinging cheerleaders,” and a duranduran video compilation. so to say we were quite familiar with their debut video “planet earth” is an understatement.
we’d go on to work with dd later on in the recording process, so it was a natural choice we attempt an homage to “planet earth” with our second single from monkey house, “the last high.” think we did a good job, huh?
