The 800-mile Trans-Alaska Pipeline System has been carrying crude oil across Alaska for nearly 50 years. To continue operating on federal land, it needs renewed authorization. But instead of thoroughly evaluating the mounting ecological concerns and long-term climate impacts from the pipeline, the Trump administration is trying to ram through a 30-year renewal. That would lock in a future of fossil fuel extraction and pave the way for expanded drilling — including in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Despite many concerns, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management is aggressively rushing the process for re-approving the pipeline's right-of-way. The agency downgraded its review to merely require an "environmental assessment" — instead of doing the much deeper environmental impact review typical of pipeline projects — and is giving the public just days to speak out in opposition.
