“When I looked up and saw no parachute, that was the most-- that was the most terrifying thing I've ever seen,” says Bravo, the U.S. Air Force officer who was shot down over Iran earlier this year. His parachute was damaged in the attack on his fighter jet. Bravo says he was essentially free-falling, and military professionals estimated later he hit the ground at between 70 and 100 mph. We will never know just how fast Bravo was falling, but the impact broke his back. He also sustained a broken arm, broken shoulder, and sprained ankle, and was bleeding from cuts and scrapes to his head and face.
