NFL coaches literally talk into a player’s helmet during the game.
NFL helmets are more than protective gear for players because Inside is a tiny digital radio receiver and speaker, redesigned in 2025 to sit closer to the ear so the player can hear the play call over a screaming stadium.
It’s one-way, so the coach can talk but the player can’t answer back.
The radio opens when the previous play ends, the coach sends the play, the quarterback relays it to the team. Then at 15 seconds on the play clock, the league deliberately cuts the line.
From that moment, reading the defence and changing the play is all on the quarterback. Only one player per side can have it active, and you can spot them by the small green dot on the back of the helmet.
Way more tech in the sports we watch than most of us realise.
