Every one of these has a reason. Nobody has ever said the reason out loud. The eye black on a grey morning. The batting glove living in the back pocket instead of on a hand. The two velcro straps that get undone and redone before every pitch even though nothing changed. The game bat that refuses to take batting practice. And a bag of seeds that empties every single game without anyone being hungry. None of it makes a player better. All of it makes a player feel ready, which is not the same thing and is not nothing either. That is most of what a routine is.
