For more than five decades, football has reigned as America’s favorite spectator sport, but new Gallup data suggests its grip may be loosening among younger audiences.
While football still ranks No. 1, just 31% of Americans now identify it as their favorite sport to watch, the lowest level Gallup has measured in a generation.
The decline is driven largely by younger adults, with only 20% of those ages 18-34 naming football as their top choice, compared with 38% of adults 55+.
At the same time, soccer continues to gain ground.
Now tied with baseball and approaching basketball’s popularity, soccer reached a record 9% in Gallup’s latest survey, highlighting the sport’s growing momentum in the U.S.
