Today we celebrate the 72nd birthday of civil rights leader, activist, and author Ruby Bridges rubybridgesofficial) 🎂✨
Ruby Bridges was only 6-year-old when she became the first African American child to integrate a white Southern elementary school on November 14, 1960.
That morning, Ruby escorted to class by her mother and U.S. marshals due to violent, racist mobs. Bridges’ brave act was a milestone in the civil rights movement, and she officially became the first Black child to attend an all-white elementary school in the South.
Today, 72-year-old Ruby lives in New Orleans and has since started the Ruby Bridges Foundation which seeks to continue addressing racial inequality in America. She describes the group mission as, “racism is a grown-up disease and we must stop using our children to spread it.”
