Few artists made repetition feel as infinite as Yayoi Kusama (1929 - 2026). From iconic polka dots and mirrored rooms to sprawling sculptures, Kusama spent a lifetime pushing art into strange, vivid and entirely unforgettable territory. A pioneer of contemporary art, she worked across painting, sculpture and performance, constantly finding new ways to make the familiar feel otherworldly. Her Infinity Mirrored Rooms, first conceived in 1965, became some of her most celebrated works, transforming entire spaces into immersive explorations of light, reflection and infinity. One of Kusama’s largest infinity rooms can also be experienced at NMACC in Mumbai, bringing her endlessly reflective universe closer to home. She represented Japan at the Venice Biennale and continued painting until her final days, holding firmly to her belief that love could save the world.
