Continuing our celebration of
#BlackHistoryMonth with 16-year-old Willie Mays as a member of Chattanooga’s very own Negro League team, the Chattanooga Choo-Choos!
Mays played for the Choo-Choos while still in high school, his first professional team. During the summers of 1945 & 1946, his father would drive him from Fairfield, Alabama to Chattanooga, Tennessee to play at Lincoln Park.
After playing with the Choo-Choos, Mays went on to a storied career in Major League Baseball and cemented himself as one of the best players in baseball history. Mays was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979. His lasting impact on the game of baseball will never be forgotten.
