Happy World Dolphin Day! Or is it? Dolphins have really fallen off in the PR department lately. Think back to grade school. There was always a horse kid, a wolf kid, and a dolphin kid. Dolphins were everywhere in pop culture, portrayed as loveable, playful, friendly creatures. They’re actually the reason our co-founder Mitty pursued a career in marine biology (she was the dolphin kid). Then people learned more about them, and public opinion took a complete 180. Dolphins have one of the largest brain-to-body ratios in the animal kingdom, complex social structures, and sophisticated communication. With that intelligence comes, let’s say, some questionable behaviour. Because dolphins are so smart, we hold them to a higher standard. We project human ethics onto them, expecting them to know better. In doing so, we forget they’re still animals that are incredibly complex, occasionally ruthless, and absolutely worthy of protection.
