Ballot Question 3 would automatically restore voting rights for Virginians who lost their right to vote after a felony conviction. Proponents say the practice has origins in racism. They argue the policy has resulted in underfunding and unequal representation for communities with large populations of those who have once been incarcerated.
As part of VPM News’ Amending Virginia series, State Politics Reporter Jahd Khalil spoke with Sheba Williams, Nolef Turns founder and executive director, about her work with formerly incarcerated people and her hope that this practice may come to an end.
