Rosh Hashanah looked different this year. We cancelled our second night dinner. Didn’t make any of the temple services. Missed tashlich. I even forgot to take a family photo. I was too tired. Still adjusting. Still finding our footing in this new life with five kids, two of them barely out of the newborn stage. Some years you show up fully. This year I showed up the way I could. But tashlich is one of the most sacred parts of the new year for our family — and I wasn’t willing to let it go entirely. For those who don’t know, tashlich is the practice of going to a body of water and symbolically casting away the things you want to release before the new year begins. It’s not just apples and honey and sweet wishes. It’s reflection. It’s accountability. It’s asking forgiveness from the people you’ve hurt and offering it to the people who’ve hurt you so that you can begin again clean, instead of carrying last year’s weight into the next one.
