#WorldSepsisDay is a reminder that knowing the signs of sepsis can save a life.
Our new survey found that less than half of adults know what sepsis is, and only 8% know all the signs and symptoms.
Sepsis is a life-threatening response to an untreated infection, and eight in 10 cases start outside of the hospital. It’s the
#1 cause of hospitalization in the U.S., where someone dies from sepsis every two minutes.
The S.E.P.S.I.S. acronym can help you remember signs and symptoms:
S — Shivering, fever, or very cold
E — Extreme pain or discomfort
P — Pale, discolored, clammy, or sweaty skin
S — Sleepy, confused, or disoriented
I — “I feel like I might die”
S — Shortness of breath
