Across New Orleans, Mayor Helena Moreno is walking alongside residents, listening to the voices that know their neighborhoods best and seeing firsthand where attention has been needed for far too long. At NORDC parks, concerns about maintenance, safety and quality of life are being heard and turned into action. At the former Mercy Hospital, demolition represents something larger than removing an old building. It is movement after nearly two decades of a property sitting vacant since Hurricane Katrina. Different places. Different challenges. One commitment. No neighborhood should become accustomed to being overlooked. Sometimes it is a safer playground, a cleaner park, a longtime concern finally addressed or a forgotten property given new purpose. Madam Mayor is standing with the people, listening to their voices and helping turn what New Orleans has waited for into what comes next.
