I'll never forget being 19, just starting out as a makeup artist, when beautiful Black and brown women would come up to my counter and we'd inevitably walk the entire floor together, swatching shades, only to discover there wasn't a single option for them in the entire department store. I'd have to send them away to another store, hoping the one brand I knew might carry their shade actually did. It pained me every time. And I never stopped asking why.
