π£ New migraine prevention guidelines are here.
The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and American Headache Society (AHS) have released updated evidence-based guidelines for preventive migraine medications in adults; the first update since 2012.
The new guidelines bring guidance for episodic and chronic migraine together in one updated resource and reflect more than a decade of research and expanded treatment options, including newer CGRP-targeted therapies.
One important takeaway: Preventive treatment should be offered as an option to adults who experience 4 or more migraine days per month, 4 or more moderate-to-severe headache days per month, or migraine that substantially interferes with work or daily life.
This does not mean everyone who meets these criteria should automatically begin preventive medication. Instead, it means preventive treatment should be part of the conversation between patients and their healthcare providers.
