The water level of Dongxi River in China's Fujian Province rose rapidly amid persistent rainfall from Typhoon Saudel, hitting the warning level of 13 feet (4.0 meters) last week. Responders activated the historic floodgate, built on a 500-year-old wall foundation, using traditional timber stacking and dense soil to block the surge. This kept the inner city and its residents safe until the flood receded.
