Our
#HubbleTopImage features the famous comet 3I/ATLAS! ☄️
This photo of the interstellar comet, taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope last year, captures it 365 million kilometres from Earth. Hubble’s observations revealed the teardrop-shaped cocoon of dust coming off its solid, icy nucleus 🧊 and also allowed astronomers to estimate its size more accurately.
Because Hubble was tracking the comet moving along a hyperbolic trajectory, the stationary background stars are streaked in the exposure.
