Did you know the first Cineplex opened in the Eaton Centre in 1979? In the northwest corner of the Centre, it was then the largest cinema complex in the world with 18 auditoriums, designed by prolific theatre architect Mandel Sprachman (photographed). Another first was the Modular 4 Sound System, which presented a new sound quality to audiences. It was developed by producer Henry Huyskens, alongside Carl Meurin who had worked on sound installations for Ontario Place and Expo '67. The Cineplex Odeon Eaton Centre closed its doors in 2001.
