The Archives remembers former Canadian Boxing Heavyweight Champion, George Chuvalo, who passed away on Saturday.
Born in Toronto in 1937 to Bosnian Croatian immigrants, he is most famous for his two bouts against Muhammed Ali. Winning 73 of his contests, 64 by knockout, Chuvalo was never knocked down in any of his 93 fights.
He suffered several personal tragedies after retirement, including the loss of his wife and three of his sons to drug overdoses and suicide. Chuvalo later went on to establish an anti-drugs program, campaigning to students and young offenders, for which he was awarded the Order of Canada in 2005 and the Keys to the City of Toronto in 2013. Chuvalo also commentated on boxing and was even involved in a number of movies, including the 1986 production of the Fly, with Jeff Goldblum and the 2014 remake of Robocop.
He leaves behind his surviving son, his daughter and his second wife.
