The United Arab Emirates is decentralizing its flagship $30 billion Stargate AI data center initiative following regional security concerns. Originally planned as a single 10-square-mile mega-campus outside Abu Dhabi, the project will now be split across a distributed network of smaller facilities throughout the country.
The redesign includes housing sensitive workloads inside underground and mountain bunkers, reinforcing buildings with blast-resistant concrete, and surrounding key sites with dedicated air defense systems. Developed via G42 alongside international technology partners like OpenAI, Nvidia, Oracle, and SoftBank, the 1-gigawatt project represents one of the largest digital infrastructure bets in the Middle East.
While spreading graphics processors across multiple physical locations presents networking latency challenges for training large models, the structural shift highlights how regional security risks are reframing capital deployment for Gulf cloud hubs.
