In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a Bedford-Stuyvesant community effort in Brooklyn began unearthing the historic remains of Weeksville—a 19th-century settlement founded by free Black Americans. Teachers and students from P.S. 243 alongside local Boy Scouts reconnected with their heritage by recovering Civil War-era artifacts, tools, and everyday items directly from the soil of their own neighborhood.
