In 1658, decades before the Salem Witch Trials in Massachusetts, a resident of East Hampton in Long Island was accused of witchcraft. After a young mother’s sudden death, Elizabeth "Goody" Garlick was put on trial for casting spells on neighbors and livestock. Her fate rested with Governor John Winthrop Jr. Instead of giving into the hysteria, Winthrop used reason and early science—delivering a surprising verdict that changed local history.
