New data shows that incarceration disparities between Black, Latino, and Tribal youth and their white peers have increased over the last decade. Here’s what you need to know:
▫️ Black youth are 5.6 times as likely to be incarcerated than white youth.
▫️Tribal youth are almost 4 times times as likely to be incarcerated than their white peers.
▫️Latino youth are at least twice as likely – and in some states, more than 3 times as likely to be incarcerated than white youth in 11 states.
These aren't just statistics, this is a systemic failure that needs to change. Equality in the system means protecting all youth. We must invest in community-based alternatives and diversion programs that support youth rather than criminalize them.
