Youth gun possession is widespread and dangerous—but aggressively prosecuting and locking kids up for gun possession isn’t the answer. Detention and transferring youth to adult courts increase the likelihood that youth will reoffend and return to the justice system. Research shows that it's far better to redirect many gun possession cases away from the formal justice system, to community-based programs that help youth build their maturity in decision making and address young people’s reasons for choosing to carry a weapon in the first place.
