Learning someone’s language is one way of saying, “I want to be part of your world.” My husband’s family is genuinely so good at making sure I feel included. But at the beginning of this trip, there were a few moments when everyone was catching up, speaking quickly, and I quietly lost the thread. Because I was smiling and nodding, my husband assumed I was following, even as plans were being made that I knew nothing about. 😂 It was a good reminder that speaking a language and following a fast-moving family conversation aren’t always the same thing. Sometimes the person nodding understands everything, and sometimes they’re patiently waiting to recognize one word so they can find their way back in. A small check-in can make all the difference. #multilingualfamily #languagedevelopment #multiculturalcouple #belgium #canada
