Ganesh Chaturthi was once largely celebrated privately. In 1893, freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak helped transform it into a large public celebration, turning the festival into a space where people could come together.
At a time when the British Raj restricted political gatherings, public festivals offered Indians a way to gather, build unity and spread nationalist ideas. Tilak saw Lord Ganesha as a symbol that could bring people together across social divisions.
What began as a religious celebration became an important part of India’s public and nationalist life — with pandals, processions, speeches and community gatherings helping create a stronger sense of unity during the freedom movement. 🇮🇳🙏
