False start. The race never happened. The cars did. The Porsche Carrera Cup debuted in Germany in 1990. Two years later, Porsche planned to bring the one-make series to the U.S. Forty-five road-legal 964s were built for Carrera Cup USA. Twenty-nine went to Andial in Southern California, where 25 were converted into full Cup race cars and four were prepared as spares. The remaining 16 stayed untouched in Charleston. Then the championship was canceled before it officially began. The 25 race cars went back to Andial and back to street-legal specification. All 45 were eventually sold through Porsche dealers, leaving behind one of the stranger chapters in 964 history. Two of those 1992 Carrera Cup USA cars will be on display at Luft 12.
