Created by campers at America’s Camp in 2006, “The Feathers of the Phoenix” is a 15-foot-wide papier-mâché sculpture inspired by the mythological phoenix, a symbol of renewal and rebirth. Each "feather" was based on a person the child wished to honor: someone who had supported them or a person of great personal importance. The imagery could be figurative or metaphorical, a name or a phrase. Today, “The Feathers of the Phoenix” is part of "In Their Honor: 25 Years of 9/11-Inspired Service," now open at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. As a generation comes of age with no lived memory of 9/11, the exhibition explores how individuals and communities transformed grief into service and how that service continues to touch lives across the country and around the world. Access is included in your #911Museum ticket. Link in bio.
