As a NCAA High Major D1 performance basketball coach over the last 10 years, I’ve had countless conversations with NBA teams about players they were evaluating.
Here’s what stands out: the questions are rarely about how much a player can bench press or squat.
They want to know:
🏀 Is he on time?
🏀 Does he complain?
🏀 Is he coachable?
🏀 Does he communicate?
🏀 Does he take care of his body?
🏀 Does he put in extra work when nobody is watching?
🏀 How does he handle criticism?
🏀 Does he make good decisions off the court?
🏀 How does he handle school and responsibility?
🏀 What do his teammates think of him?
Talent matters. Strength matters. Athleticism matters.
But when teams are deciding who they want to invest in, they’re also evaluating habits, character, discipline, maturity, and trust.
If you want to become a college or professional athlete, understand this:
They’re evaluating you long before they ever call your name.
Your daily habits are part of your résumé.
